Fouls

Although basketball is a fun, and action packed game, it can get rough at times. While you play, or even if your just watching a game on T.V you will see a lot of fouls and violations that are called by the referee during the game. In this post I will explain the different fouls and consequences for these actions. Well lets get started.

Personal Fouls--Personal fouls are fouls that are called when a illegal physical contact is done to a player. These fouls happen when:

  • Hitting
  • Holding
  • Slapping
  • Pushing
  • Illegal Screen
  • Illegal Pick
Personal Foul Penalties--When a player gets fouled they are awarded 2 free throws(only when his/her shot is missed). When a player gets fouled while shooting and the shot is successful he/she will be awarded 1 free throw(a.k.a AND1).

The most amount of points you can get in a play is 4 points. This is when you are fouled at the three point line, and your shot is successful, the referee while reward you with one free throw shot. If you are fouled at the three point line and you shot was not successful you will be rewarded 3 free throw shots.

If a player is fouled while on defense their team will be awarded possession of the ball and only have 5 seconds to inbound the ball. When this scenario happens this is called inbound.

When a team commits 7 or more fouls in one game the person which is fouled gets to take 1 free throw, if he misses that was his only chance but if his first shot was successful he will be rewarded 1 more shot. When this happens in a game this is called One and One.

When a team commits 1 or more fouls in one game the person which is fouled gets to take 2 free throw shots.

**Now i will be explaining some more fouls that can be called on the court so pay attention!**

Charging--This is an offensive foul when a player pushes or runs over the person on defense. The ball is then given to the other team.*Note* The referee won't always call this foul every time he sees someone getting trampled over*

Technical Foul--Technical foul is when player or a coach can be caused by foul language, obscenity, obscene gestures, and even arguing with the referee.

Intentional Foul--When a player makes physical contact with another player with no reasonable effort to steal the ball. This is most likely to happen towards the end of the game when the scores are really tight and they want the ball badly they are willing to sacrifice a foul for it.

Blocking--Blocking is illegal personal contact resulting from a defender not establishing position in time to prevent an opponent's drive to the hoop.

Flagrant Foul--This should never happen in a game for no apparent reason. This sport is meant to be fun not violent. But enough about that this is what it means-Violent contact with an opponent. This includes hitting, kicking, and punching. This type of foul results in free throws plus the offense retaining possession of the ball after the free throws.
